First Commandment – Q&A #11

The First Commandment

“Thou shalt have no other gods before me”

Question: If God is the only Mind, who made evil? Why does it seem real?

Answer: Evil is a lie. If you have not already done so, you might read the first two chapters of the book of Genesis. There, you will read about the “two creations.” The first is real, and the second is a description of the false sense of creation. Mrs. Eddy calls it the “Adam-dream.” Here is what she says:

“The parent of all human discord was the Adam-dream, the deep sleep, in which originated the delusion that life and intelligence proceeded from and passed into matter. This pantheistic error, or so-called serpent, insists still upon the opposite of Truth, saying, ‘Ye shall be as gods;’ that is, I will make error as real and eternal as Truth.” (S&H 306-307)

“If God made all that was made, and it was good, where did evil originate.” It never originated or existed as an entity. It is but a false belief; even the belief that God is not what the Scriptures imply Him to be, All-in-all, but that there is an opposite intelligence or mind termed evil. This error of belief is idolatry, having ‘other gods before me.’” (Mis. 45)

The “mind” that would ask the question “Where does evil come from?” is the so-called mind of evil itself, or mortal mind. God doesn’t ask such a question! We should learn to think as God would think. Rather than wondering where evil comes from, it is a better use of our time to command evil to stop talking to us, and then tune in to the divine Mind’s messages of harmony and perfection!

Practice: Today, stayed tuned to God!  Listen for His voice only.
